Boxing Day at Rottnest Island

Just offshore from Fremantle is Rottnest Island, so called because the original Dutch visitors mistook the small and numerous indigenous marsupial for rats. A Boxing Day tradition here in Fremantle and Perth, originating 14 years ago, is for boaters to gather in one of the bays of Rottnest Island and raft up for a day of sun, alcohol, and partying. Twenty of us from the Pirates Backpackers headed out join in.

The scope of the spectacle is hard to capture in photos. Only a fraction of the boats there in the perhaps ten groupings of boats could be captured in any one photo.
